Settings for our trailer

Here we have some pictures of some of the different places we hope to film in when filming our film trailer:

Adapting to a team member leaving

Just as we were about to get to the stage where we could start filming, Josh, one of our group of 3, drops the subject, leaving just me and Jak. He had briefly mentioned that he was considering it the previous week, but i hadn't thought he'd go through with it so soon. When i found this out, it did quite annoy me as he'd given us hardly any warning, he had said that he was going to get hold of the camera we were going to use do that we could have effects such as pull focus, so we would have to find another camera, or use one of the schools ones. We had recently changed the production company logo so that it was a combination of our three names, so that will have to be changed again.

Title design for our trailer

For the design of the title for our trailer, we knew that we wanted something that looked handwritten, so using Photoshop, Jak created multiple ideas for the title:

A poll was then created on a website called strawpoll.com, and then the three of us and some friends voted on which one we liked best:

Target Audience and USP

The target audience for our film trailer is young adults and people in their late teens. We chose this demographic because people of this age are the people who stereo-typically enjoy thrillers the most. We will also probably aim more at the male audience as again, they are stereotyped as liking this type of film more than females.

The Unique selling point (USP) of our film is that from the point that the montage starts, there will be a lot of tension, the audience will be aware that someone dies from the news report at the start, but they don't know who, as multiple people disappear throughout during the trailer, so they will be trying to figure that out, and when they find out that only one person was the killers target, they suspicion will only heighten.

Titles and Information

At the end of our trailer, we are going to need to put the title of our film, and information about it.
Here is a list of all the information that we are going to need to put in our trailer:
  • Title - Sharpie (written in the font 'Biro') These are some of the ideas for how it could be written on screen:
  • Approximate release date
  • Names of the main cast members
  • Production company name and logo (this will probably be the only one at the start)
  • 'From the creators of:'

Script and Storyboard for trailer

Here is the story board we used for the filming of our film trailer:

And here is the script that we used:

This may not be a finished script, but it is our initial draft for it. Changes may be made to it as production of our film trailer goes along.

Costumes and Props

For the costumes, there wasn't much that needed deciding. We are going to have our four protagonists wearing casual wear, as they would just be on a night out at first. The antagonist, sharpie, is going to be wearing all black. I am playing Sharpie, and I will be wearing black skinny jeans, a black t-shirt, an unzipped black hoodie with the hood up, black gloves, black shoes and socks, and have a black mask on so that my face is obscured. I already own all of these items of clothing except for a black mask, which i'm hoping i can make, or borrow from the school drama department, although if i do have to buy one, i doubt it will be that expensive.

For our film trailer we don't think that we're going to need many props. We are going to need weapons for the antagonist to hold, and for these we are going to use a large kitchen knife and an axe. We are also at one point going to have two of the people check their phones, so obviously phones are another prop that we're going to need, we are also going to need to make it look like they are drinking alcohol during the pub scene, so we will use glasses that alcohol would usually be served in, and put non alcoholic drinks in them.

Initial Planning of our trailer.

Here is a picture of the mind map we made when coming up with the idea of sharpie:
From the image, you can see how we initially came up with the idea of 'Sharpie' with each previous idea sparking a new one.

Filming risk assessment

Here is the risk assessment made by jak for the filming of our film trailer. There were quite a few risks, as we were possibly filming with an axe and a large kitchen knife, and using a car to film some of the trailer, but all incidents can be avoided.

Sharpie pitch questions

These are some of the questions we received at the end of our film trailer pitch:

Have you thought about how you're going to film the scenes in the pub, and how you're going to get permission for them?
We are going to try and film most of the shots in the bar in a booth that is against a wall, so that we wont have people in the background that we have to ask permission, although there will; be some shots not at a booth, where will have to use clever angles to make sure there isn't anyone in the background.

What are you going to use for the weapons?
We have access to a knife and an axe, so if we are allowed to use those then we will, but if not, then we are able to get hold of fakes as most/all of the shots with the weapons in, you wont be able to see the weapons in great detail, so it wont matter too much.

What special effects are you going to use, and how?
We are not 100% sure what special effects we are going to use at the moment, but we are fairly sure we will use effects such as black and white, pull focus and montages to help create the right emotions at the right time.

Film trailer pitch

Here is the video of our group presenting the pitch for our psychological thrill trailer titled 'Sharpie':

Here is the script we used for the pitch, although at the last minute, we decided not to use it very much, and read it slide by slide:

Production company logo.

For our film trailer, we weren't sure at first whether or not we wanted to use the same production company name as last year, but at the moment we have decided that we are. one thing that is going to change,  however, is the logo for 'lone wolf productions'.
Here is our logo from last year:

We decided that this logo probably wouldn't suit the tone of our psychological thriller trailer, so we wanted to make a new one. Using basic tools in power point, i was able to make and animate a first draft for our new logo:

The aim for this logo was to make it look like it had been drawn on to a piece of paper with a sharpie, as 'sharpie' is currently the name for our film.

Since i made this new logo, we decided again that we were going to have a new production company, and therefore a new logo. Using Photoshop, Jak cam up with a new name a few new logos for our company, which is now called 'JADOSH Productions' and has these logos:

Once Jak had created these potential logos, we discussed which one we would like to use in a Facebook group chat:

Psychological thriller pitch

This it the pitch for our initial idea for our our psychological thriller.

For the first slide, we just used the title/logo for our film, and all three of our names. We decided that we wanted the title to look hand written, so we looked through the fonts, and decided to use the font 'Biro'.

For our next slide, we cover the basic plot of our film, but it is not written in much detail, as we will explain it in more detail when we actually present the pitch. the film follows four drunk teenagers who are trapped in a school with a killer called Sharpie, and one by one the teens go missing.

For this slide, we cover the cast we are hopefully going to be using on our trailer, and what they will be wearing. Hopefully, i will be playing the killer, as he can be played by anyone because his identity is unknown, as he is wearing a mask.

This slide is quite short, as it explaining some of the props we will be using. we could not think of that many, as we don't think many will be needed.

This slide covers the USP of our film. it will create tension as the audience will know someone has died, but they are unsure who.

This slide covers the music and target audience. they were put on the same slide as they were both quite short topics to cover. we are hoping to make our own music for our trailer, using violins and drums possibly with some other instruments as well. the target audience will be people in their late teens/young adults, and will be mainly for thrill seekers.

This slide talks about the different settings we will need to use. at the moment, we don't think we will need to use more than three settings, a pub, on a street, and in the school.

For this slide we talk about the different camera work that will be used. there will be multiple tracking, close up and panning/wide shots. we may also be able to get Arial shots thanks to a drone that Jak owns, and fast paced moving shots as i can now drive, so we could film from inside my car.

In this slide, we talk about the different editing techniques we will probably be using when making our trailer. A lot of these follow typical conventions of psychological thriller trailers such as fades to black and montages.

In the last slide, we talk about some of the conventions that our film trailer follows, such as sudden change of pace, production company information and titles, and leaving the audience on a cliffhanger.

Psychological thriller conventions

From looking at different psychological thriller trailers, i have noticed that some commonly used conventions are:

  • Fast paced editing
  • Fast paced music
  • Builds to a climax at the end of the trailer
  • Non chronological
  • Tension building
  • Close ups
  • Range of locations

Third and final draft of the trailer
